Dr. H. Kit Miyamoto

Dr. H. Kit Miyamoto leads Miyamoto International, a global earthquake structural engineering company, Miyamoto Global Disaster Relief, a nonprofit technical organization, and is a California Seismic Safety Commissioner. Dr. Miyamoto was the recipient of the National Council of Structural Engineers Association’s Excellence in Structural Engineering Award, three consecutive ENR “Best Global Project” awards and the ASCE Humanitarian Award. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He specializes in high-performance earthquake engineering, disaster mitigation, response and reconstruction and recently won the 2016 U.S. Presidential “E” Award for the firm’s significant contributions to the export of technical knowledge.
Dr. Miyamoto is an expert consultant to World Bank projects globally, including a seismic risk mitigation project for 2,000 schools in Istanbul. During the 2010 Haiti earthquake, he worked with the government of Haiti, the UN, USAID and various NGOs to conduct damage assessments of more than 430,000 earthquake-damaged structures and rebuild more than 12,000 buildings. He is currently involved with earthquake reconstruction in Nepal and Ecuador, assisting with Mexico’s post-earthquake recovery and his firm runs an important preparedness and technical training program for USAID/OFDA in Latin America. Dr. Miyamoto holds graduate degrees from the Tokyo Institute of Technology and California State University, where he has been recognized as a Distinguished Alumni. Dr. Miyamoto has published more than 100 technical papers. He has been featured by CNN, BCC, NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, the Discovery Channel, the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and Rolling Stone magazine.
